Early mill engines like this have a triple eccentric for the valve gear, the first two control steam admission and the direction of the engine (forward/reverse) and the third adjusts the 'cut-off' to make best use of the steam. Most slide valve mill engines in Java use Stephenson's valve gear. (RD)
