The carbon dioxide needed for carbonatation is derived from the combustion of anthracite (or coke) as well as the decomposition of the calcium carbonate (limestone) which also produces quicklime (calcium oxide). That process is carried out in these top loaded lime kilns - the quicklime is delivered at the base. All mills need quicklime to make up 'milk of lime' for the defecation process, but only carbonatation mills make their own. (RD) |
